In the Meridio Math DREAMS Experience, students work together to discover how math has transformed topics that they love, such as sports strategy, building a business, or saving lives with nanotechnology.
Rather than just practicing equations, students talk through realistic problems as a team with help from a generative AI facilitator. The AI agent summarizes their discussion into equations and guides them to explore different approaches to solve the problem. Then, students can simulate their strategy and discuss how they would improve their solution.
In this work, we have three key outcomes:
- Joy and Math Identity: By co-designing experiences with input from students, we want every student to see how math grows and transforms issues that they care about.
- Math Languages: Recognizing how different middle school math skills (e.g., pre-algebra, proportions) are important to different real-life situations, as tools to talk through a solution.
- STEM Communication: Talking about non-trivial math problems with other students, to increase their ability to apply math to decisions they make as a group.
Through these outcomes, Meridio Math DREAMS aims to help students recognize how math can help them accomplish their dreams and change their world.
